Powderpost Beetles

Powderpost Beetle

Class: Insecta
Order: Coleoptera
Family: Bostrichidae
Metamorphosis: Complete

How do I identify a Powderpost Beetle?
Color: Reddish brown to black in color.
Size: Typically ranges from 1/32" to ¼" long.

Have Powderpost Beetles infested your home?
Homeowners will typically see damage to the home before seeing the beetles. Early detection is the best defense. Look for small, exit holes usually just 1/32" – 1/16" in diameter as well as the powder-like dust in or near the exit holes.

Infestations could be active or the beetles may have died out on their own. In order to know the difference sweep up any powder residue and seal all holes. Re-inspect the area at a later time. Most infestations occur in the Spring or Summer so waiting until next season may be necessary. If you are concerned of the possible damage that may occur in the interim contact a pest management professional.

Will Powderpost Beetles bite?
No, powderpost beetles will not bite.

Will Powderpost Beetles damage my home or structure?
Yes, Powderpost Beetles will chew through wood making it into a fine, flour-like powder. Over time these beetles can compromise the structure of a home by eating away at important support beams.

Recommendations for control: Inspecting wood that has been stored or even purchased prior to using will help prevent infestations. Controlling moisture by increasing ventilation will also help.

Powderpost beetles attack unfinished wood therefore staining, painting or treating the wood with an appropriate insecticide will help kill the beetles as they exit a hole. A pest management professional can make applications as necessary.
